Noto

Our plant in Noto was built in 1958 by an Italian company to produce ethyl alcohol from carob pulp for the food industry. In 1974 it was bought by an American multinational group, which started to process carob pods to produce high-value locust bean gum (LBG). The plant has been part of Tate & Lyle since 1995.

Hoffman Estates

The Customer Innovation and Collaboration Centre in Hoffman Estates, near Chicago, was opened in 2012. It is the primary global research laboratory within Tate & Lyle. Decatur

In 1912, the A.E. Staley Manufacturing Company purchased the Decatur facility from Pratt Cereal Oil Company. Across the Staley years (1912-1988), both the facility and site evolved – expanding in size and complexity. This theme of expansion and modernisation remained when Tate & Lyle purchased Staley in 1988. From 1 April 2022, our joint venture “Primient” operates the more than 400 acres that includes production operations, an administration building, R&D labs and full pilot plant capabilities. Tate & Lyle leases space from Primient in the admin building and R&D pilot plant, and will continue to produce some of its sweeteners out of the Decatur facility

Houlton

The Houlton plant was opened in 1962 by Morningstar-Paisley Corporation, a division of International Latex, Inc. In 1967, A.E. Staley acquired the Morningstar part of the business to add technology and production capabilities for working with tapioca and potato starches. In 1988, Tate & Lyle purchased A.E. Staley and, therefore, the Houlton facility. In addition to producing starches from tapioca and potato, the facility also processes corn starch supplied from our Sagamore and Decatur plants. From these three starch bases, we make a variety of speciality food and industrial modified starches.

Van Buren

Our facility in Van Buren was originally built by the Diamond Shamrock Corporation in 1977. A.E. Staley Manufacturing then bought the plant in 1982 to use as a pilot plant for commercializing speciality starches and other new products. In 1988, when Tate & Lyle acquired the facility from Staley, operations were expanded and refocused on the manufacture and production of modified instant texturant and speciality starches.
